Frequently Asked Questions, Answered!
How Long Does Invisalign Take?
The timeline of an Invisalign treatment can vary from person to person. It will largely depend on the severity of your child’s misalignment (and how well they stick to the 22-hour wear time requirement!). On average, though, Invisalign takes about 12 to 18 months to fully reposition crooked teeth.
After we perform an oral exam and get a better understanding of your child’s dental situation, we’ll be able to provide you with a more accurate timeline estimate. We’ll also help you schedule regular check-in appointments so that we can monitor your child’s treatment progress and make adjustments if necessary.
What Happens After Orthodontic Treatment?
After completing any type of orthodontic treatment, most children must continue to wear a retainer in order to prevent their teeth from drifting back into crooked positions. There are a couple of different types of retainers, the main two being fixed/permanent and removable.
A fixed/permanent retainer is, rest assured, very low-profile. We’ll simply adhere a thin metal wire behind your child’s teeth, and this will help keep them in place.
A removable retainer looks more like a mouthguard, and is usually only worn at night. Your child will have to brush it with hand soap at least once per day, keep it in its protective case when not in use, and remember to give it a quick rinse before and after putting it in their mouth.
Can My Child Get Traditional Braces on Just Their Top or Bottom Teeth?
We very rarely recommend this because the teeth and jaw are so interconnected. Often, shifting one arch of pearly whites affects how the others sit at rest, and how the bite lines up while chewing. In the vast majority of cases, it’s better to treat both arches of teeth.
If we believe your child’s misalignment is minor and could potentially be treated with only one arch of braces, we’ll be sure to let you know. Otherwise, it’s safe to assume they’ll need a full set of brackets and wires.
What level of education is required to be an orthodontist?
The road to becoming an orthodontist begins with earning a bachelor’s degree, usually with high grades in a major that’s heavy in math and science. Then, they must be accepted to an accredited dental school in the U.S. and obtain their Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or a Doctor of Dental Sciences (DDS) degree.
At this point, they have already completed 7+ years of schooling, but their education is far from over. To become an orthodontist, they must also complete additional training and, if they’re as committed as our very own Dr. Cohen, become board-certified. To this day, she pursues continuing education with professional organizations like the American Dental Association and the Illinois Society of Orthodontists so she can stay up-to-date on the latest in the field.
What do you do if you can't afford an orthodontist?
All too often, patients hesitate to get the care they need or want because they are worried about the price. We never want that to be the case for our patients in Deerfield, which is why we offer several solutions, including financing. If you would like more details, just give us a call! A friendly member of our team would be happy to answer any questions you have and show you where to sign up.
How do I get emergency orthodontic care?
Did one of your brackets come loose? Did you accidentally misplace one of your aligners? Did your retainer break? Whatever the case may be, don’t hesitate to call our office! From there, we can learn more about your situation, determine if a same-day visit is necessary, and walk you through how to handle your orthodontic emergency in the meantime.
Important reminder: If you are bleeding uncontrollably, you’re having trouble breathing, or you’re experiencing any other potentially life-threatening symptoms, you should call 911 or head to the ER immediately.
How can I find a female orthodontist?
There are a few ways you can find a female orthodontist in your area, starting with searching on Google and extending to asking friends, family members, and neighbors you trust for their recommendations. With all of that said, if you’re looking for a female orthodontist in Deerfield, you don’t have to look far – we have a talented, experienced, and caring one right here!
How many orthodontists are in Deerfield?
According to Google, the population of Deerfield is around 19,000. Since there is usually one dentist for every 2,000 people, that means there are about 10 in the area. Keep in mind that this is an estimate for general dentists, not specialists, like an orthodontist.
